On Saturday morning, Susan was cleaning the porch at home and passed out. She was able to regain consciousness and called Jack, who found her at home unable to communicate. She was taken to Centerpoint Medical Center by ambulance, where she stayed until Sunday evening. They initially thought she was having TIA, or mini strokes. However, after a series of episodes, including loss of movement in her right arm and leg, tingling sensations in her mouth and tongue, and involuntary movements in her limbs, it was determined Susan needed a different care team.
Around 1 a.m. she was transferred to St. Luke's on the Plaza where it was determined that she had a pontine stroke. They anticipate the stroke occurred around 7 p.m. on Sunday evening. This is very serious stroke in a very serious part of the brain, near the brain stem.
The care team at St. Luke's is closely monitoring Susan for brain swelling. She was having a hard time breathing and swallowing and is currently intubated to help control her gag reflexes. Please intercede on her behalf and ask Lord to keep her brain from swelling.
Then we'll begin the long recovery phase and see what will come back for Susan.
She is currently in the Medical ICU at St. Luke's on the Plaza and family welcome visitors at the hospital. Visiting hours are closed from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and again 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Although Susan sometimes seems to be unresponsive, she can hear everything and is listening. Only bring encouragement and positive words into her room. Please talk with her, pray, and sing to her, but use a low voice just in case her head hurts.
And remember to bring strength to Susan - she has been the shoulder that so many have leaned, be there for her now.
